Factors to Consider with a High BMI Patient

While no two patients are the same, a high body mass index (BMI) can add complications to a surgical procedure.  Here are some things to be mindful of when a patient presents with a high BMI:

  1. The management plan needs special attention. A patient with a high BMI, and is on a variety of medications for blood pressure and diabetes, is totally different than treating an otherwise healthy patient.1
  2. Is the patient medically appropriate for surgery? There are many articles that identify key indicators during patient selection. But, a patient with a high BMI has a greater risk of side effects and complications.2-3
  3. Many facilities that participate in bundled payments have begun setting a BMI cutoff (as an example, 40) for surgery because of increased financial risk due to resource utilization.2
